Pain is the 5th vital sign and as a hospice/pall care RN for 22 yrs, assessment skills are crucial in pain management. Assessment skills are essential in matching the right drug for the description of pain when approaching docs in making suggestions. Along with that is f/u when administering pain medication and knowing onset of medications. Nurses are true advocates for the patients they care for. If meeting resistance from medical staff, I find an article to support suggestions. Once medical staff see the difference in patients who are now pain free results in trust in nursing skills and assessment including patients…they are happier with thier medical team because now they can participate in life when pain is relieved. We have the tools, we have to utilize them, and our patients are our greatest teachers. Listen, learn, act and f/u. Education on pain management to our peers is instrumental in building confidence. Every interaction is an educational opportunity.
